Small firms deserve a seat at the media table — not just a mention

Small and micro business owners tell me the same thing time and again: decisions are made about them, stories are written about them, but too often they are not the ones being heard.

That matters. Because when policy is shaped, when public opinion is formed, and when the economic narrative is written, the absence of real business voices leads to a distorted picture. The lived experience of running a small business — managing cashflow, navigating regulation, taking risks — can get lost.

That’s why Business111 has agreed a partnership with Newspage. The aim is straightforward: to make it easier for small and micro businesses to contribute directly to the media conversation.

Newspage is a platform that connects journalists with commentary from business owners across the country. Instead of relying solely on corporate spokespeople or large organisations, it enables reporters to hear from those actually running businesses day to day. That includes perspectives on taxation, employment, energy costs and the wider economic climate.

We’ve already seen how this can work in practice. Contributions from Business111, including recent commentary on Making Tax Digital, have appeared alongside those from other small business owners in national coverage. It’s a reminder that when the route is there, the appetite to speak up is strong.

This is not about promotion for its own sake. It’s about representation. When small firms are visible in the media, the conversation becomes more balanced and more grounded in reality. It also helps challenge assumptions — particularly the idea that one size fits all when it comes to business policy.

Of course, media exposure can bring practical benefits. It can raise awareness of a business, build trust, and, in some cases, drive interest online. But those outcomes are secondary. The more important point is that small businesses are part of the national conversation, not on the margins of it.

The partnership gives Business111 members the option to take part if they choose. Some will want to comment regularly, others occasionally, and some not at all. That flexibility matters. Running a business comes first.

What matters is that the opportunity exists — and that it is accessible without needing a PR agency or large marketing budget.

Access and pricing

Newspage can be used on a free basis.

For those who want greater access, paid tiers are available. Business111 members can currently access a 50% discount using the code PF1SYTMT.

This brings entry-level paid access to around £25 + VAT per month, with no long-term commitment and the option to cancel at any time.
