When Business Debt Becomes Personal
What happens when your business survives—but you don’t? In this episode, Graham Lloyd Evans shares a deeply personal account of how financial pressure moved from his company into his home life. What does Local Loop do?
Visit ResourceWe help Merseyside B2Bs get paid faster for the sales they make locally. Less stress and wasted
time chasing invoices to stay on top of cash flow means better relationships with your
customers, and - in turn - the ability to be a better payer for your suppliers.
Sounds lovely and simple, so why is getting paid - and paying - on time for each and every invoice
so difficult to manage?
A key problem here is what we call ‘payment gridlocks’, those stressful situations of having to
explain to your supplier “I can't pay because I haven't been paid”, only to find that the customers
who owe you are in exactly the same situation. All too often, one business’ cash flow crunch sets
off a domino effect of late payments.
The more trading that happens within a group of businesses, the more the outstanding invoices
start to look like a ‘debt spaghetti’, and the worse the payment gridlocks become. Like a traffic
jam at rush hour, this is no-one’s fault - just an unintended consequence of local trading that can
only be solved with better coordination.
As it happens, there’s one group of businesses that knows exactly how to do this coordination -
the banks. ‘Clearing’ has been used by the banks for hundreds of years, and enables them to
handle billions of pounds in global payments to each other with minimal uncertainty, delay, and
cost.
Supported by local and national government, we’ve built the Local Loop platform to make
clearing available to Merseyside B2Bs of all sizes and sectors. By doing all of the invoice data
collection, analysis, and results implementation, we help ensure faster payment for the work
your business does, and reduce the stress and hassle of chasing.
To illustrate what all this looks like, we’ve collected and analysed spending data published by all
six local authorities across Liverpool City Region (LCR) for June 2025, and shown that Local Loop
could in principle have cleared around £240k for them, just from the debts they owed to each
other.
